Force Tempo Traveller meets visitors from the USA at Delhi airport with a driver and a written fare. Most visitors from the USA reach India after a flight of about 14 to 16 hours and land in Delhi tired and unsure where to find their ride. This guide covers that first stretch: where you land, what the time difference does to your first day, and how a driver waiting at arrivals changes the start of the trip.
Everything here is practical, not promotional. Confirm your own flight times with your airline, and send us your flight number so the pickup is planned around your actual landing.
Landing at Delhi airport
Delhi’s international airport is Indira Gandhi International (DEL). Most international airlines use Terminal 3, but check your ticket or boarding pass for the terminal on the day.
Allow an hour or more between landing and walking out: immigration, baggage and customs all take time after a long flight. Tell us your flight number and the driver follows the actual landing time, so a delay does not leave you waiting alone.
The drive from the airport to central Delhi is usually 30 to 60 minutes, and longer in rush hour. Your driver knows the quickest approach for your hotel.
Flights and the time difference
India does not use daylight saving time and is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC. That makes it 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of US Eastern time in summer and 10 hours 30 minutes in winter, and about 12 hours 30 minutes to 13 hours 30 minutes ahead of the US Pacific coast.
A gap that large turns the first day upside down. Plan a light first day, drink water, and avoid booking a long road trip for the morning after you land.
Documents and money
Check the current Indian visa rules for your passport on the official Indian government e-Visa portal before you book flights, and keep your visa approval with your passport.
You do not need an international driving permit, because every booking includes a professional driver. Carry your passport, your itinerary and our contact details, and keep a little cash in rupees for small expenses.
A sensible first few days from Delhi
Many US visitors start with the Golden Triangle. From Delhi, Agra is about 233 km and Jaipur about 280 km, each a half to a full day by road. Others head to Rishikesh for yoga or to the hills.
- Day 1: land, check in, rest, an easy local walk.
- Day 2: sightseeing in Delhi with a local rental and the same driver.
- Day 3 onward: your first long route, once you have slept properly.
If you want one driver for the whole trip, tell us the full plan and we will quote it as a single multi-day booking.
Choosing a tempo traveller on arrival
Most international visitors book a 12 seater or 15 seater for family groups and a Maharaja luxury tempo traveller for comfort-first trips. Smaller parties choose the 9 seater. Fares are quoted in Indian rupees with a written fare before you travel; see the full fleet and airport transfers.
